GRZEGORZ PRZYBOREK
TOUCHING SILENCE
Grzegorz Przyborek is a major figure in Polish contemporary photography. Over the last forty years he has built a unique body of work, entirely crafted in his studio on the 11th floor of a tower block in Lodz. His photographic world draws its inspiration from visions and dreams, sometimes very concrete, even intimate ones, but nonetheless with a strong political undertone. Each of his images can take months to materialise. The “dream” is initially turned into a very accurate drawing. Then, each part of the image involves the patient construction of all its constituent elements.
Eventually, the meticulous layout of the shooting set begins. The exhibition in Marseille invites visitors to explore his work starting with the Portraits series produced at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie d'Arles in 1990—Grzegorz was a visiting student there between 1989 and 1990— and ending with the latest compositions produced between 2020 and 2022. Some forty drawings, objects and sculptures are also on display, along with a film about his work, partly made in Arles in 2019.
Admission included with the Rencontres d’Arles 2024 pass
