Bas Vroege is director of Paradox, a not-for-profit production house for multiplatform documentary photography, founded in 1993.
From his position at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK, The Hague, NL), he teaches editorial and curatorial practice at the Masters in Film and Photographic Studies (University Leiden).
Paradox develops exhibitions, books, films, websites and apps driven by a social agenda for international venues, incl. Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing), Museo Nacional de Bellas Arte (Santiago de Chile), Bergen-Belsen Memorial Centre (DE).
Among the projects realised are: Go No Go (on migration in Europe, 2003 with Ad van Denderen), The Last Days of Shishmaref (on global warming with a.o. Dana Lixenberg, 2008), Poppy – The Trails of Afghan Heroin (Antoinette de Jong and Robert Knoth, 2012), Via PanAm (on migration in the Americas with Kadir van Lohuizen, 2013), 9 Days – From My Window in Aleppo (movie on the war in Syria, Issa Touma, 2015), Welkom Today (South Africa after apartheid with a.o. Ad van Denderen, Lebohang Tlali, 2019), NOWHERE (on contemporary architecture with Frank van der Salm in collaboration with an AI scientist, a composer a.o., 2021).
